Dirty little secret not so secret
Among most traffic police, there's been a dirty little secret that motorists are not stopped for traffic violations unless they exceed the speed limit by more than 10 mph. This effectively makes the speed limit 10 mph higher than the posted limit. Police generally say that unless the violations are gross, they are not upheld in court. This practice was confirmed in a report in the Post: This practice creates an unsafe comfort level at high speeds and is a potential safety hazard, according to the report being released Monday by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The group found that 42 states allow drivers to regularly exceed the speed limit before they are stopped.
